Abu Salil says that once, in Baqi’, a man stood up in our gathering and said that my father or uncle narrated this hadith to me: that once he saw the Prophet (peace be upon him) in Jannat al-Baqi’, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) was saying, “Whoever gives something in charity, I will testify in his favor on the Day of Resurrection.” Upon hearing this, I began to untie one or two folds of my turban so that I could give them in charity, but then I was overcome by the same hesitation that usually befalls the sons of Adam, so I tied my turban back. A little while later, a man came, the likes of whose dark and wheat-colored complexion I had never seen in Jannat al-Baqi’, and he was leading a she-camel, the most beautiful she-camel I had ever seen in all of Jannat al-Baqi’. He came and said, “O Messenger of Allah, may I present something in charity?” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Yes.” He said, “Then please accept this she-camel.” Then that man left. I said, “Such a man is giving this in charity! By Allah, this she-camel is better than him.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) heard this and said, “You are wrong; rather, he is better than you and this she-camel.” He said this three times. Then he said, “Destruction is for those who possess hundreds of camels, except...” The people asked, “O Messenger of Allah, except whom?” He said, “Except the one who spends his wealth in such and such a way.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) closed his palm and gestured to the right and left. Then he said, “Successful is the one who is indifferent to the world and strives hard in worship.”
