English translation

It is narrated from Miswar (may Allah be pleased with him) that once Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) sent a marriage proposal to the daughter of Abu Jahl (in the presence of Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her) and made a promise of marriage. Upon this, Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) came to the service of the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) and said: "The people of your community are saying among themselves that you do not even get angry in matters concerning your daughters, because Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) has sent a marriage proposal to the daughter of Abu Jahl." Hearing this, the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) stood among the noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), praised and glorified Allah, and said: "Fatimah is a part of my flesh. I do not consider it good that she be put to trial." Then the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) mentioned his elder son-in-law, Abu Al-As bin Al-Rabi' (may Allah be pleased with him), and praised him greatly. Then he said: "The daughter of the Prophet of Allah and the daughter of the enemy of Allah cannot be united in the marriage of one man." Thus, Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) abandoned this idea.
