English translation
It is narrated from Bara (may Allah be pleased with him) that in the early days of Islam, if a person fasted and fell asleep before breaking his fast at the time of iftar, then he could not eat or drink anything that night and until the next evening. One day, a certain Ansari was fasting. At the time of iftar, he came to his wife and asked, "Do you have anything to eat?" She replied, "No, but I will go and look for something." In the meantime, he fell asleep. When his wife came and saw him, she said, "You have suffered a loss." The next day, when only half the day had passed, he (unable to bear the hunger and thirst) fainted. This was mentioned before the Holy Prophet (ﷺ), and on this occasion, this verse was revealed: "It is made lawful for you to be intimate with your wives during the nights of fasting..." The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain.
