English translation

Muhammad bin Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once I saw a gold ring on the hand of Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him). People were saying to him, “Why are you wearing a gold ring when the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) has prohibited it?” He replied, “Once we were present with the Noble Prophet (ﷺ). In front of him was a heap of war booty which the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) was distributing. Among them were captives and ordinary things as well. The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) distributed all those things until only this ring remained. The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) raised his gaze and looked at his companions, then lowered his eyes. This happened three times. Then the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) called me by name. I came and sat before the Noble Prophet (ﷺ). The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) took that ring and, holding the part of my little finger near the joint, said, ‘Take this and wear it. Whatever Allah and His Messenger make you wear, wear it.’ So how can you tell me to take it off when the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said to me that whatever Allah and His Messenger make you wear, wear it?”
