Translation
English translation
It is narrated from Bara bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the occasion of the Battle of Uhud, the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) appointed Abdullah bin Jubair (may Allah be pleased with him) over fifty archers and stationed them at a place, saying: "If you see us in such a state that birds are snatching us away, even then do not move from your place until I send a message to you. And if you see us prevailing over the enemy and trampling them, even then do not move from your place until I send a message to you." But when they saw the spoils of war, they said, "People! Spoils of war!" Abdullah bin Jubair (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Are you forgetting what the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) told you?" They did not listen to him. Thus, this verse was revealed: "When you saw the things you desired, you began to disobey," meaning when you saw the spoils of war and the defeat of the enemy, you did not obey the command of the Prophet (ﷺ).
