Translation

English translation

It is narrated from Bara bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) made a treaty with the people of Hudaybiyyah, Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) sat down to write the document of its contents. He wrote in it the words "Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah" (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), but the polytheists said, "Do not write these words, because if you were the Messenger of Allah, we would never have fought you." The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), "Erase these words." Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I cannot erase them." So the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) himself erased them with his blessed hand. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) made peace with them on the condition that he and his companions (may Allah be pleased with them) would only be able to stay in Makkah Mukarramah for three days and could only bring with them "jalban silah." The narrator asked the meaning of "jalban silah," so he replied, "the sheath and its sword."
