Abu Nofal says that at the time of death, a severe anxiety overcame Amr bin Aas (may Allah be pleased with him). When his son, Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), saw this condition, he asked, "O Abu Abdullah! What is this anxiety? The Prophet (ﷺ) used to keep you close to him and entrusted you with various responsibilities." He replied, "Son! This is indeed true, but shall I tell you something? By Allah! I do not know whether the Prophet (ﷺ) treated me in this way out of love or for the sake of winning my heart. However, I can testify to this: until he departed from this world, he loved two men—one was Ammar, the son of Sumayyah (may Allah be pleased with him), and the other was Abdullah bin Masood, the son of Umm Abd (may Allah be pleased with him)." After narrating this hadith, he placed his hands under his chin and began to say, "O Allah! You commanded us, but we abandoned it; You forbade us, yet we did those things; and nothing can encompass us except Your forgiveness." He continued to repeat these words until he passed away.
