حَدَّثَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ، حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ نُفَيْرٍ الْحَضْرَمِيَّ، يَذْكُرُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ النَّوَّاسِ بْنِ سَمْعَانَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ، أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ الْبِرِّ وَالْإِثْمِ، فَقَالَ: " الْبِرُّ حُسْنُ الْخُلُقِ، وَالْإِثْمُ مَا حَاكَ فِي نَفْسِكَ، وَكَرِهْتَ أَنْ يَطَّلِعَ النَّاسُ عَلَيْهِ " (١)،
Translation
English translation
It is narrated from Nawas (may Allah be pleased with him) that I asked the Prophet (ﷺ) about virtue and sin. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Virtue is good character, and sin is that which pricks your heart and you dislike that people should come to know of it.
