حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ، أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ، عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ، عَنْ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَامِرٍ الْيَحْصَبِيِّ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ، يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: " إِنَّمَا أَنَا خَازِنٌ، وَإِنَّمَا يُعْطِي اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ، فَمَنْ أَعْطَيْتُهُ عَطَاءً بِطِيبِ نَفْسٍ، فَإِنَّهُ يُبَارَكُ لَهُ فِيهِ، وَمَنْ أَعْطَيْتُهُ عَطَاءً بِشَرَهِ نَفْسٍ وَشَرَهِ مَسْأَلَةٍ، فَهُوَ كَالَّذِي يَأْكُلُ وَلَا (١) يَشْبَعُ " (٢)،
Translation
English translation
It is narrated from Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) say: I am only a treasurer; the real giver is Allah. Therefore, if I give something to a person with a happy heart, it will be made blessed for him. But if I give something to someone to protect myself from his evil, or because of his insistence in asking, then it is like the one who keeps eating but is never satisfied.
