Translation
English translation
It is narrated from Khalid bin Waleed (may Allah be pleased with him) that once he entered the house of Ummul Momineen Maymunah bint Harith (may Allah be pleased with her)—who was his maternal aunt—along with the Prophet (ﷺ). She placed before the Prophet (ﷺ) the meat of a lizard, which had been brought from Najd by Umm Hafeed bint Harith, who was married to a man from Banu Ja’far. It was the blessed habit of the Prophet (ﷺ) that he would not eat anything until he had asked what it was. So, one of his wives said, “Why don’t you tell the Prophet (ﷺ) what he is eating?” Upon this, they informed him that it was the meat of a lizard. The Prophet (ﷺ) left it. Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) says, “I asked: O Messenger of Allah! Is it forbidden?” The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, “No! But it is not the food of my people, so I prefer to be cautious about it.” So I pulled it towards myself and began to eat it, and meanwhile, the Prophet (ﷺ) kept watching me.
