English translation

Ibn Abi Mulaika says that it was near that both the best individuals, that is, Abu Bakr and Umar, would remain saddened. The incident occurred when the delegation of Banu Tamim appeared in the court of the Prophet. One of the two elders suggested appointing Aqra’ bin Habis as their leader, and the other suggested someone else. Abu Bakr said to Umar, “You only want to oppose me.” Umar replied, “I have no intention of opposing you.” In the presence of the Prophet (peace be upon him), their voices became raised. Upon this, the verse was revealed: “O you who believe! Do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet (peace be upon him).” After this verse, whenever Umar spoke to the Prophet (peace be upon him), he would speak so softly that the Prophet (peace be upon him) would have to ask him again.
