Hassan bin Kareeb says that one of his slaves passed away, and his father was extremely grieved by it. Seeing his condition, Hoshab said: "Shall I not tell you a hadith which I heard from the Prophet (peace be upon him) regarding a child like your son?" A companion of the Prophet (peace be upon him) had a son who had become able to walk; he used to come with his father to the Prophet (peace be upon him). After some time, that child passed away. Due to his grief, his father did not attend the service of the Prophet (peace be upon him) for six days. The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked the companions, "I do not see such-and-such a man." The people informed him, "O Messenger of Allah! His son has passed away, and he is extremely grieved by it." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to him, "O so-and-so, tell me, if your son were with you now as a lively and active child, would you prefer that, or would you prefer that your child, in courage, becomes a source of reward for you like the youths of Paradise? Would you like your child to reach the best age of old age, or would you like it to be said to you, 'Enter Paradise; this is the reward for what was taken from you.'"
