English translation

It is narrated from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (ﷺ), while consulting people regarding the prisoners of the Battle of Badr, said: "Allah Almighty has given you power over them (now what is your opinion?)" Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)! Allow me to strike off all their necks." The Prophet (ﷺ) turned away from his suggestion and again said, "O people! Allah has given you power over them; yesterday they were your brothers." Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) again stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)! Allow me to strike off all their necks." The Prophet (ﷺ) turned away from his suggestion and for the third time repeated his words. This time, Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)! In our opinion, you should forgive them and accept ransom from them." Upon hearing this, the sadness disappeared from the face of the Prophet (ﷺ), and he forgave them and accepted ransom from them. On this occasion, this verse was revealed: " لَوْلَا كِتَابٌ مِنْ اللَّهِ سَبَقَ لَمَسَّكُمْ فِيمَا أَخَذْتُمْ إِلَى آخِرِ الْآيَةَ "
