English translation

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked whether the Prophet (ﷺ) used to raise his hands in supplication. He replied that once, on a Friday, people said to the Prophet (ﷺ): "O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)! The rain has stopped, the land has become dry, and wealth is being destroyed." Upon hearing this, the Prophet (ﷺ) raised his hands so high that the whiteness of his blessed armpits became visible to me, and the Prophet (ﷺ) supplicated for rain. At the time when the Prophet (ﷺ) raised his blessed hands, we could not see any clouds in the sky, but when the prayer was finished, the young men living in nearby houses found it difficult to return to their homes. When the next Friday came, people said: "O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)! The buildings of the houses have collapsed and the riders have been forced to stop outside Madinah." Upon hearing this, the Prophet (ﷺ) smiled at the impatience of the son of Adam and prayed to Allah: "O Allah! Let this rain fall around us, not upon us." So the rain was diverted away from Madinah.
