حَدَّثَنَا بَهْزٌ، وَعَفَّانُ، قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ، أَخْبَرَنَا قَتَادَةُ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، أَنَّ يَهُودِيًّا مَرَّ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَصْحَابِهِ فَقَالَ: السَّامُ عَلَيْكُمْ، فَرَدَّ عَلَيْهِ أَصْحَابُ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " إِنَّمَا قَالَ: السَّامُ عَلَيْكُمْ "، فَأُخِذَ الْيَهُودِيُّ فَجِيءَ بِهِ فَاعْتَرَفَ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " رُدُّوا عَلَيْهِمْ مَا قَالُوا " (١)،
Translation
English translation
It is narrated from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that a Jew greeted the Prophet (ﷺ) and the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) by saying "As-Saam Alaikum" (death be upon you). The Prophet (ﷺ) said to the companions (may Allah be pleased with them), "He said 'As-Saam Alaikum'." The Jew was brought and he admitted it. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "When a person of the Book greets you, reply to him with the same phrase."
