English translation

It is narrated from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (ﷺ) ordered that more than twenty chiefs of the Quraysh be dragged and thrown into a well at Badr along with all their filth, and so it was done. It was the practice of the Prophet (ﷺ) that after gaining victory over any people, he would stay there for three nights. After gaining victory over the people of Badr, the Prophet (ﷺ) also stayed there for three nights. On the third day, he (ﷺ) ordered that the mounts be prepared. When the mounts were ready, the Prophet (ﷺ) set out in one direction, and the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) followed him. We thought that the Prophet (ﷺ) was going to relieve himself, but the Prophet (ﷺ) stopped at the edge of that well and began to call out to them by their names and the names of their fathers, and said: "Do you now find it pleasing that you had obeyed Allah and His Messenger? Did you find true what your Lord had promised you?" Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)! Are you speaking to bodies in which there are no souls?" The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, "By Him in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad (ﷺ), you do not hear what I am saying to them more than they do." Qatadah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Allah granted them life again so that they could hear the words of the Prophet (ﷺ), and the purpose of this was rebuke, humiliation, and punishment.
