Musnad Ahmad Hadith 12406

It is narrated from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (ﷺ) went to Sa’d bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) and, after seeking permission, said, “Peace and mercy of Allah be upon you.” Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) replied in a low voice—so low that it did not reach the ears of the Prophet (ﷺ). The Prophet (ﷺ) greeted three times, and each time Sa’d replied in such a way that the Prophet (ﷺ) could not hear. Consequently, the Prophet (ﷺ) turned back. Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) ran after him and said, “O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)! May my parents be sacrificed for you. Every time you greeted, I heard it with my own ears and replied, but I did not let you hear (I kept my voice low). I wanted to gain as much of your prayer for peace and blessings as possible.” Then he took the Prophet (ﷺ) into his house and presented raisins. After the Prophet (ﷺ) ate them, he said, “May righteous people continue to eat your food, may the angels of mercy continue to pray for you, and may those who fast break their fast with you.”
