حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحٌ (١) ، حَدَّثَنَا صَالِحٌ، أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَى عَنِ الْوِصَالِ، فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ: إِنَّكَ تُوَاصِلُ. قَالَ: " لَسْتُمْ مِثْلِي إِنِّي أَبِيتُ يُطْعِمُنِي رَبِّي وَيَسْقِينِي ". فَلَمَّا أَبَوْا أَنْ يَنْتَهُوا عَنِ الْوِصَالِ، وَاصَلَ بِهِمْ يَوْمًا، ثُمَّ يَوْمًا، ثُمَّ رُئِيَ الْهِلَالُ، فَقَالَ: " لَوْ تَأَخَّرَ لَزِدْتُكُمْ كَالْمُنَكِّلِ " (٢)،
Translation
English translation
It is narrated from Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said: Do not observe continuous fasting for several days with only one pre-dawn meal (suhoor). The companions (may Allah be pleased with them) submitted, "O Messenger of Allah! You observe fasts continuously in this manner?" The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said: I am not like you in this matter. I spend the night in such a state that my Lord Himself feeds and gives me drink. But still, they did not refrain, so the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) observed continuous fasting for two days, then the moon was sighted. The Noble Prophet (ﷺ) said: If the moon had not been sighted, I would have continued in this manner for several more days, as if the Noble Prophet (ﷺ) expressed disapproval of this practice.
